Kyle Petty to sub for John Andretti
DOVER, DE (June 3, 2000) Kyle Petty, who did not qualify for tomorrow's MBNA Platinum 400 at Dover Downs in the No. 44 Hot Wheels Pontiac, will serve as a relief driver for his Petty Enterprises teammate John Andretti, who is continuing to recuperate from a rib injury sustained last weekend during Winston Cup practice at Lowe's Motor Speedway.
GREG STEADMAN, CREW CHIEF, NO. 43 STP/CHEERIOS PONTIAC GRAND PRIX:
(ON DECIDING TO USE KYLE IN RELIEF) "We hadn't planned on it. It's just something that happened. It's a shame that he missed the race, but he's really good here."
(ON MODIFYING THE CAR TO ADJUST TO THE HEIGHT DIFFERENCE BETWEEN KYLE AND JOHN) "It's not too bad. It's just that we had limited time here. We had however long it took to run the Busch race. That's all the time we had to change the seat and get everything the best we could."
(WHO MADE THE FINAL DECISION?) "Kyle did. It was up to him. We told him we wanted him to drive, but it was obviously his decision."

Kyle Petty Speaks on the Loss of his son, Adam

Jason Keller Proves That Life Is Good On Concrete - Wins MBNA Platinum 200 In Battle With Mark Martin
It was Excedrin Headache #57 for Busch series racers at Dover Downs Saturday. Jason Keller, driving the #57 Excedrin Chevrolet, was the one handing out the headaches, as he roared past the fabled Mark Martin with 43 laps to go and held on to win the MBNA Platinum 200 on the Monster Mile of Dover Downs. The win was Keller's first of the year in Busch Series racing, and first at Dover Downs, as well. Still, Keller had won on concrete before at Bristol, so the win was not entirely unexpected.

The team is bringing a third Pontiac from their shop on NC for the race. It's not the first time it has happened, in Sept 1992, eventual 1992 Winston Cup Champ, Alan Kulwicki had to truck a 3rd car up to Dover after wrecking twice(6-4-2000)
Mike Joy/Fox Show: The New England Dodge Motorsports Weekly, on FOX Sports Net in New England has been on for a few weeks, Mike Joys hosts the show (for info see the full Press Release at New England Dodge Motorsports Weekly Debuts on Fox Sports Net PR). The latest show had Worcester(MA) Telegram sports columnist John Gearan whose Mothers' Day column attacking auto racing provoked thousands of angry emails, letters and phone calls to the newspaper and its advertisers(see the article link at the bottom of my Past Columns/Article Links page. Anyhow, a few readers wrote in after seeing the show, here are a few comments: Mike didn't hold back any questions, asking the tough questions like 'would Gearan change anything looking back on it', answer was 'no'. How did he came to the conclusions he did in the article: statistics gathered about the number of deaths compared to the number of participants". Why he dislikes auto racing so much? he said it is too dangerous. Gearan said he was surprised with the responses he received, "unaware" that his article would be distributed on the Internet. He allegedly places most of the blame on the South(USA), citing that there isn't much interest in auto racing in Mid-Mass. He also stated he didn't intend to offend anyone and regrets that he did. Mike Joy then invited him to a New England short track race and be a member of the pit crew, no word if Gearan accepted(6-4-2000)

Joyner-Kersee-Roehrig Motorsports? haven't heard much on this Cup team since they withdrew the #34 Sunoco Pontiac from the Daytona 500. I am being told that the team is working hard to find a sponsor for the 2001 team and may run a race or two late in the season(6-3-2000)

NASCAR NOTEBOOK: Busch guys find winner with Keller By: Michael Carvell
Dover, Del. Jason Keller proved Busch drivers can beat the Winston Cup guys Saturday at Dover Downs International Speedway. Keller held off a charging Mark Martin over the final 42 laps to win the MBNA Platinum 200. It was only the second time out of 12 companion races during Winston Cup weekends in which a Busch regular took the checkered flag.
AUTO RACING: Elliott wrecks No. 2 start By: Michael Carvell
Dover, Del. --- A blown right-front tire has blown Bill Elliott's position on the front row for today's MBNA Platinum 400. Elliott, who was to start next to pole-sitter Rusty Wallace, crashed during Saturday morning's Winston Cup practice session at Dover Downs International Speedway. The extensive damage to the rear of the No. 94 Ford caused the team to roll out its backup ride.

Kenny Wallace's braintrust tried to outsmart NASCAR, but it didn't work.

A very quick Recap of The Mike Joy (Class act) and Gearan (Something I flushed, but keeps coming back) Interview ..... From Oscar "The Grumpy" ..........
Gearan was not a typical sportswriter as we image them. 35 yrs. Writing, 20 as sports columnist.
Said statistics and studies and analysis led to his distaste for racing. too much death.
Refereed to studies and numbers and statistics often.
Was surprised by outrage. Would write article again. Felt Mother's Day was good time to speak out.
Felt safety has improved but so has speed and risk. Would not encourage anyone into racing.
Mike Joy was even handed, and stated after session, Gearan had right to write what he did but we have right to write back our feelings, which it appears he did.
My impression of Gearan was one of an unpassionate fan of sport possibly hot stuff once on a local market in a regional conservative world. More like an accountant of old or a risk
maager/analyser for an old style insurance firm. Not equipped to handle instant information via satellite TV or the Internet.
Personality wise he seemed to be very self righteous and is not a caring person, way too involved in numbers, not people or their feelings.
Thank You Very Much! Oscar THE Grumpy!!!!!
Moving memories for Petty / Son’s death hit him hard in racing return
Kyle Petty says the memories of his son just “keep flooding back.”
Naturally, the emotion roared to its latest zenith on Thursday, when Petty rode his motorcycle into Dover Downs International Speedway and returned to stock-car racing three weeks after the death of the youngest star in NASCAR’s First Family.
“Rolling through the front gate and knowing Adam wasn’t here was pretty hard,” said Petty, his voice quavering. “I didn’t take it too good. Being at the track on Thursday nights was our time, mine and Adam’s, because he was here through [Busch] inspection, and then we’d go to dinner and do stuff.
“Coming to the track, that was the toughest part. I don’t think the race-car part will be that hard.”
Melling team expected to field Dodges :)))))
Dodge will apparently officially add a fourth team to its stable for 2000 next week.
Melling Racing has scheduled a news conference for next Friday at Michigan Speedway and is expected to announce that it will field Dodge Intrepids in 2001.
`Leader bonus' adding up
The number of different winners in the Winston Cup series this season has helped contribute to the build up of the Winston Cup "leader bonus," paid to the winner of a race should the winner also take or maintain the series points lead after the win.
A need for more than speed at Dover
Getting around Dover Downs International Speedway faster than anyone else doesn't guarantee success. No driver knows that better than Bobby Labonte. Despite five qualifying records in two different series, Labonte has but one victory in 14 Winston Cup starts on The Monster Mile. That came last June, after he set the track standard with a run at 159.320 mph.
Waltrip's swan song off key
Win 84 races and three Winston Cup championships and you expect that when it's time to leave, you'll go with dignity. That's what Darrell Waltrip envisioned when he announced his farewell tour for this year.
Kenseth's boss in way of record By Dick Brinster
Young Matt Kenseth is already among the favorites to win at Dover.
Matt Kenseth has a chance to make history, and his boss wants to make sure he doesn't.
For Mark Martin, Sunday on The Monster Mile might be more entertaining than any he's had in a while. He and his employee-teammate are among the drivers to beat in the MBNA Platinum 400 at Dover Downs International Speedway.
"I think it would be great if it came down to the two of us for the win," Martin said.
Pemberton on Dover
Robin Pemberton, crew chief for Rusty Wallace's No. 2 Miller Lite Ford, discusses the nuances of setting up the car for Dover.
Can't get car out of Park: Driver struggles for win, contract
Steve Park is waiting. Waiting for a new contract to drive the No. 1 Chevrolet fielded by Dale Earnhardt Inc. and waiting for his first Winston Cup victory.

NASCAR youth movement hits Dover
NASCAR hits Dover, Del., this weekend with its youth movement at the fore of recent developments.
Pit bull is born to be Earnhardt fan
There was a time when, because of his aggressive driving style, Dale Earnhardt -- The Intimidator -- was considered the pit bull of NASCAR.
Now there's a pit bull who thinks she's Dale Earnhardt.
Trey, a month-old pit bull puppy, was born with birthmarks in the shape of No. 3 -- Earnhardt's famous racing number -- in both ears.

Concrete evidence at Dover / R.Wallace enjoys rough road ahead
After wrangling his 3,400-pound stock car around Lowe's Motor Speedway for more than four hours and 600 miles, Rusty Wallace can't wait to take a spin on the bumpy, bone-jarring concrete of Dover Downs International Speedway.
Kyle Petty, whose most recent Winston Cup win came at Dover in 1995, will return to NASCAR this weekend.

KEY STRETCH: Dover is start of an important time in schedule for Sadler, Stewart, Rudd
• NASCAR, responding to complaints from some crew chiefs and car owners, has cut back Ray Evernham's Dodge testing schedule, according to Dodge officials. So Evernham is planning to take his R&D Intrepid testing program to some non-Winston Cup tracks, such as St. Louis' Gateway.
What's NASCAR going to do with $300 million?
• Budget time in garage has crews talking about cash
Rock Star planning to race:
Drummer for the rock band Smashing Pumpkins, Jimmy Chamberlin, will pursue a career in motorsports after the band breaks up at the year of the end. The bands lead singer, Billy Corgan told a radio station "I think that everybody wants to go and do different things. I know that Jimmy really wants to race cars, it's a real passion of his," No other info is available on what type of racing the drummer is interested in pursuing.

Get New Bumper Covers
Wind tunnel and dynamometer testing has apparently paved the way for
changes in NASCAR’s Pontiac stable, as the stock car sanctioning body
today announced new equipment changes for the Pontiac Grand Prix.
Bechtel's Motor Sports Hot List:
Matt Kenseth: What's the deal with these rookies winning? Does this mean
Ed Berrier will win next week?
Jerry Nadeau: Might have had the best car at Charlotte while it was
running. He will win a race, and will surprise everyone who has never
heard of him (lotsa folks) and the few who have.
((note from Sue ... will not surprise me AT ALL when Jerry Win's,,,, but
sure will excite me!!))

Sue Over Walkway Collapse
Five people injured when a pedestrian walkway collapsed at Lowe's Motor
Speedway and two of their spouses filed a lawsuit Wednesday against the
track's parent company and the construction firm that built the bridge.
The lawsuit, filed in Rowan County Superior Court, accuses Speedway
Motorsports Inc. and Tindall Corp. of negligence in the May 20 accident
that injured 107 people. At least 15 people remained hospitalized
Wednesday, two in critical condition.

As many of you know I am from Flagler County Florida, Palm Coast to be exact. Just 20 mins north of Daytona International Speedway ... This area as well as ALL of Florida, New Mexico, California and other western states are in Emergency conditions for fires. I am very fortunate to be up here in NC and be able to keep up with ALL that is happening in Flagler County via an EXCELLENT site that offers Up to the min info on fire status. They are in the worst conditions in over 40, YES FORTY, years. Flagler County Emergency Services

If you have a link for any other areas that are in such shape Please email them to me ,,, I would like to make a link page so Everyone can keep up with these SCARY fires. Thanks. 2 years ago I used this newsletter as a fire update also and I will do so again this year if the need arises. They said on WRAL
http://www.wral-tv.com here in the Raleigh area that they are already sending people down to help out....The severe drought conditions are bad enough, but in speaking to my Mom tonight she explained that the wind gusts could spread a fire in the wink of an eye. Do not throw cigarettes out car windows, do not pull a car over onto grass ...even a golf cart on grass can start a fire.
